Virtual Gulag Silenced

I just love edwired– Mills Kelly’s blog devoted to the intersections of digital technology and history. It’s also connected to the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University.
Earlier this year, Mills taught a course called “Lying About the Past” and mentored his students in the creation of their own historical hoax, which they released on the Internet. Launched during the first week of December, the hoax generated lots of press attention, including a blog post in USAToday and a piece in The Chronicle of Higher Education.
Recently, Mills posted about Russian authorities raiding the offices of the human rights group, Memorial, in St. Petersburg. The authorities seized all of the group’s archives, paper and data, the group had gathered on the tens of thousands of victims of the Gulag and was in the process of making available through thrir Virtual Gulag Museum, an off shoot of the Center for History and New Media’s project “Gulag: Many Lifes, Many Days.
Guess Russia is flexing its muscle in more ways than just blocking natural gas from the Ukraine. Yikes.
