Help a Teacher Month
Oct 2nd, 2008 by LA Brain Terrain
DonorsChoose.org has launched its annual BloggerChannel this month–a friendly competition to see who can mobilize readers to support public classroom funding requests.
I’ve signed up LA Brain Terrain this year. I’ve selected 2 SoCal projects near and dear to my heart: Mrs R, a kindergarten teacher in San Diego, needs about $370 more to purchase a new rug for her kids to use during story time. I can’t tell you how many days I spent sitting on a soft rug listening to stories read by my teachers. It’s a tactile memory that continues to resonate.
The other project involves an SOS from Mr. H, a 10th grade English teacher at Hamilton High in LA, requesting funds to teach Octavia Butler’s novel, Parable of the Sower, to his students. What better way to introduce lit to LA teens than a sci fi story set in apocalyptic Los Angeles?
Let’s make these dreams a reality. If we each donate the cost of lunch each week, we could really make a difference. I know times are hard, and they will only get harder for our education system if we really do end up in a deep recession.
I also see this project as a great way to channel single lady angst about not having a spouse or family toward something positive. If you’ve every grumbled about forgetting to have children or experienced sadness over not having a kid, won’t you adopt these schools and share your warmth and love?
